It was a digital camera company (can't remember who) who would send people out to pose as tourists. They'd approach someone and request that they take a picture of them. They hand over their camera (the latest and greatest model, of course) and get their picture taken. They'd leave without ever revealing that they were hired by the camera company. I guess the intention was to impress the person who was approached with the features of the camera so they'd remember it when the time came to buy their own, or when they told their friends about the cool camera the guy they met had.
Saab could do something similar- drive to a parking lot in an upscale mall and be sure the guy parked next to them in the BMW sees the neat features of the Saab. How about "buying" something at home depot and proceeding to load your purchase onto the 9-5's sliding floor in the busiest possible area? The test drive idea might work too, but I think its easier to sell something to people when they don't know you're selling them something- like product placement ads on TV. The other night I saw a show where the camera panned the setting- but a PT cruiser was in the center of the shot the entire time. Not sure if I'd go for a spontaneous test drive- my mom told me not to get in the car with a stranger!
