anyone under 40 who fits the bill; meaning, Yuppy is a great word as a descriptor and doesn't have to be only applied to the mid to late 1980s. Many of us that were in junior high and high school at that time still use the term today to refer to people who are basically 1) rather well educated 2) have non-traditionally expensive tastes 3) subscribe to the general principals of capitalism 4) can be rather socially liberal in practice while being fiscally conservative in theory 5) go to art openings and the like 6) don't really mind flaunting the things they have both obtained and inherited 7) have a streak of bohemianism underneath all the capitalism...
And, yes, my boys school high school friends all thought BOTH the 3 series and the C900 were the total bomb in 1988. In fact, two of my best friends got brand new C900s, one a really beautiful white two door and the other a black convertible. I was jealous of them, but I had a immaculate little 1969 cream w/ black top Kharman Ghia convertible. One of the points of being Yuppy was and is to have something that most people don't have without being too traditional. Saab has always fit this, and that totally in-your-face C900 design has earned the entire nameplate a perpetual place in Yuppiedom. GM knows this, too.
The 9-3 and 9-5 are all as much yuppie today as the C900 was in the 1980s. I would say the NG900 though is now too recently old, if that makes sense, to be termed yuppy. However, I'd say a well restored C900 coupe or convertible could be Yuppy again --Just think if that Star
Wars kid driving one in that recent movie Life As A House set in a totally yuppy communtity in So Cal.
