SS,
Another note on cold humidifiers - I've used them in the past, and found that in addition to the detractors mentioned by Keeton, the cold ones are also more prone to incurring mold/bacterilogical build-up inside them. The hot ones (or any humidifier) should only use distilled water, as Keeton pointed out, but an even greater advantage of hot ones is that the moisture disperses much more effectively into room-temperature air then with cold ones. The steam produces much smaller droplets of moisture than the cold ones, and this saturates the room air much more effectively than cold dispersion. Have three children myself, and would always opt for the hot method, given the option.
