We had the same happen a while back. Not wanting to lock the doors and get a broken or damaged window/door etc (a car down the street had window smashed and portable CDplayer stolen) , install an alarm (annoying) in the car or a flood light to illuminate the driveway (PITA), I went to the local radio shack and got one those portable motion detector alarms that are sold as 'hotel room' alarms. They have two kinds, one hangs on a doorknob and senses the motion of the object it's hung on and the other use PIR detector just like a light or alarm. I got the PIR, each was somewhere around $20 and I put one in the car closest to the street....the kids opened one door of the car closest to the street and got 100dB screech and took off, never made it to the other car....never came back.
