Saab and Subaru in Joint Venture on 9-2 follow-on vehicle. Info, photo and link to additional photos below:
"Saab to add small car
By Dave Guilford and Rick Kranz
Automotive News / April 16, 2003
Saab will expand its product line by adding the 9-2, a small car developed with and built by Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.
Peter Augustsson, CEO of Saab Automobile AB, says the 9-2 will be a hatchback with all-wheel drive.
“We see an emerging segment in the United States for a premium, small car below the Saab 9-3 sport sedan,” he says. Saab's other car is the 9-5.
The 9-2 will be built in Japan for the Swedish automaker, beginning next spring. It will sell in the low $20,000s, Saab says. The automaker plans to build about 7,000 each year.
Saab will offer two versions, both with five doors and all-wheel drive. The base 9-2 will be equipped with a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine, while the Aero version will feature a high-performance, 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
Initially, the car will only be offered in Canada and the United States.
General Motors owns Saab. GM also owns 20 percent of Fuji, which makes Subarus.
The first 9-2 will be a lightly modified version of the five-door Impreza wagon powered by Subaru's familiar flat-four engines. It is an interim solution to Saab's need for a third range of vehicles below the 9-3.
Designers and engineers from both companies already are working on a joint-venture model to replace the Impreza in three years. That second-generation 9-2, inevitably including a diesel-engine option, will be sold in Europe.
Robert Lutz, vice chairman of product development at GM, says: “Both brands have this special flair. It is a natural fit for them to combine their talents and expertise to bring the first all-wheel-drive performance car into the Saab family."
The first 9-2 will debut at the auto shows in Los Angeles and Detroit in January. It is said to feature a distinctive Saab look for the front end, fenders and hood after major contributions by Saab head of design Michael Mauer. But the rest of the car, including the interior, is expected to be all Subaru.
Saab sold 37,804 cars in the United Sates last year.
Saab decided not to sell the first-generation 9-2 in Europe for two reasons: No diesel is available, and in Europe, the 9-2 would face direct competition from models such as the Audi A3 and BMW 3 series Compact."
