Hi,
Saab's new fully synthetic motor oil apparently has the highest
TBN of _any_ 30 weight oil. This means that it will be very good for
cars subjected to short trips and for long drain intervals.
The following is response from Blackstone labs about my question
about TBN and whether or not any of it is from sufated ash:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Jay,
This is the highest TBN we've seen for a 5W/30 oil too. All
engine oils (except aircraft) have additive in them that are sulfur-based,
and which will produce sulfated ash if burned. TBN often relates to the
sulfur amount in the oil, which can run 1.0% or higher in some type of
oils. So long as the sulfur doesn't become free sulfur (having slipped its
surly bonds) or coke out as deposits from parts temperatures that are too
high (>350F) the sulfur is not a problem.

In the above, Jim Stark has two typos. My name is Jae not Jay and
the oil is 0w-30 and not 5w-30.
Anyway, the oil has the highest TBN Blackstone labs has seen in a
30 weight oil.
Below is oil analysis report.
thanks
Jae
