Help: whee: bearing question

Hi all
Our Audi A4 ('99) needs a wheel bearing replacement for the rear passenger wheel. Mechanic say both rear wheel bearings need to be replaced together, even if the left one is still OK. Car has just about 50,000 miles.
Is it really necessary that both bearings be replaced at the same time? The replacement kit comes as a single unit.
Thanks for any guidance on this matter.
Regards
