Where we would have our "Wonder What the Poor People are Doing Today?" parties back in college. We were the poor people, but a half dozen or so of us would volunteer to install the dock each Spring, remove it each Fall, place the electric launch in the lake in the Spring, or dry-dock it for Winter. All just to have a small scale non-rowdy celebration on the Estate grounds when we were done.
I found out the owner made his money by owning the AMT plastic model company. Damn! I bought and built a whole bunch of those as a kid.
In addition to the Main House, there is a three story Boat House (fully enclosed boat slip on first floor, party room on second floor, and a roof-top veranda) which is positioned so that the trees on the island block the setting sun from blinding those in the party room, a 2 BR Guest House, an Observatory with glass geodesic dome, small care-takers quarters, and a small funicular to allow easy access to the beach from the Main House for those who were mobility impaired. Not to mention the tennis courts and 3-hole golf course.
One of my Fraternity Brothers lived in the Care-Takers Quarters and did quite a bit of the grounds work in exchange for free lodging.
S.S. Kresge (owned K-Mart) lived on the same lake and had an identical electric launch. But whereas Mr Gallogly's boat had brass railings with a beautiful aged patina and cushions in a classic deep burgundy color, Mr Kresge's boat had chrome plated railings and painfully brilliant blue cushions. Yes, the irony struck me even as a 21 year old. Mr Kresge motored up to us one day when we were working for free just to chat for a while. Nice man, must have been in his eighties at the time.
