This week I got a solar install with roof panels, heat pumps, water heater and Tesla storage battery. The brains of the system is the Tesla Gateway, which comes with the battery. It routes e- to the battery (if it is not fully charged), then to the house, and the excess onto the grid. If the solar is not generating enough to run the house, you draw energy from the grid. All this happens instantaneously. The same Tesla phone app I use for my car tells me, at any moment, how much e- is being generated, how it is routed, how much is being added or drawn from the grid. Now that I have the battery fully charged, it will just stay that way until an outage. You can use part of it to run the house in normal conditions, but they don’t recommend that. I think it would be a totally different system without the Tesla battery and gateway. The electricians did a hell of a lot of work and I have a lot of control panels.
The install, for my relatively small house, took 3 1/2 days with about 8 guys and 4-5 trucks here on average. Supercool IMHO.
