Crappy plastic chrome and aluminum... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() |
At the Auto Show in Motion the new Caddys have fake chrome rings around tach and speedo that really look fake. I'm no expert on injection moulding but the Caddy chrome instrument rings look uneven or not very precisely molded, like the plastic shrunk a little or?
It's interesting to me the reliance on plastic aluminum look finishes in modern cars including Saabs. Newer 3 series BMWs have cheap aluminum look edges around the guages where as with the 5 series it looks like quality, though it's probably still plastic. The bottoms of the 3 series instrument rings are squared off adding to the cheap look.
Pretty much all automotive grills are plastic chrome lately and they look OK and hold seem to hold up well.
Even BMW uses composite plastic front fenders for the 645s.
Plastic doesn't have to look like crap. Open the coin door on a Honda, nicely textured with fuzzy stuff inside. Open the coin door on a Malibu or G6, tacky mold flashing on visible surfaces, no finish to the inside, slightly greasy silicon texture to the whole part.
