German, Japanese and Korean Automakers

Do you think Hyundai will eat Japanese automakers' lunch? Quality of a
Hyundai is now equivalent to that of any Japanese make. I don't think
the question is as far fetched as it may sound since at one time the
thought of Detroit losing to Japanese automakers would have been absurd.
Another question I have is just How German and Japanese automakers manage
to thrive when all others wilt under pressure. One of the auto rags
mentioned that BMW didn't produce the first sports sedan. About three
European cars, including Saab 99, beat BMW to the punch. But, BMW has
thrived while Saab has struggled and a lot of other makes have died out,
especially the British automakers. So, how do the Germans and Japanese
thrive while others struggle and die?
Cheers,
Jae
