The Volvos from 96 and up are even more picky and you migh get away with a cheapo cat for a year or so but it most likely will fail.

I have first hand experiance with it from my own 96 960.
We installed several after market catalytic converters on this car when a customer still owned it. The cat lasted about 6-8 month and then the check engine light came back on with a code for failed cat.

Replaced the cat under warranty and everything was fine again until 6-8 month later.

The third cat, we bought from Volvo. Volvo had started to sell low cost rebuilt cats which was strange because when they arrived they were brand new. We thought it might be a legal reason for them to be able to sell the cat cheaper by calling it rebuilt instead of new.

Anyway, 6 month later that one was dead too.

Now we bought a brand new cat from Volvo and when that one arrived I noticed that the Volvo rebuild ones was a tad smaller in size compared to the "real deal cat" from Volvo (even though they looked very similar at a quick glance).

We installed that one and now 5 years later it is still running and passing smog every other year.

The customer sold the car in the middle of this due to that the transmission failed.

So if you are planning to keep the car you should go with an oem cat but also make sure that the real reason for the failure is found and cured.
