Had a 1981 Civic wagon, the only new car I bought in my life. In all 130k and change miles I drove, the only mechanical problem I had was a water pump replacement. That is If you do not consider it a maintenance item. The rest is maintenance. It went through a few exhausts, brake pads, batteries and tires.
In the end I destroyed the engine myself. No longer a graduate student living in off campus apartment but instead commuting 100 miles each day to work, I stuck to the six months oil change routine. So 15,000 mile oil change on dino made quick work of the camshaft and it blew the head gasket one day. I replaced the head gasket myself in the garage but not the camshaft. The condition of the body does not warrant more extensive repair after 12 years of ownership. I sold it later for in a quick sell.
I got 50 mpg going from New Jersey to Chicago one summer. It has no power. Fuel economy it was second to none.
