I have two 96 960 myself (selling one of them).
Timing belt is every 70K and the water pump and timing belt tensioner/idler pulleys should be replaced at the second belt change to minimize the risk, cost $550.00.
The 960 have an A/C door flap actuator (vaccum diaphragm type) that goes bad.
The factory way to replace it is to remove the dash board but a seasoned Volvo mechanic can pull the lower part of center console out and replace it from below in about 3-4 hours, cost $350.00.
You hear a bad actuator by having the A/C on at full blast with Rec on and drive the car under full throttle. If the A/C air doors start changing positions after some seconds when the engine vaccum diminish, the actuator is bad.
The PCV box under intake manifold start to leak oil and the original intake gasket crack and create a vacuum leak, cost $250.00.
Radiator, thermostat, heater valve and all hoses should be replaced at some point and time up around that mileage, cost $700.00
The 6cyl engine is just as bullet proof as all the other Volvo engines (except the V6).
And just like all other cars, fluid changes every 30K miles.
The straight six though is not fuel efficient. You probably get around 16-18 mpg around town and maybe 22-25mph on highways.
