every time I drive one I'm a bit disappointed. However, I have come very close to replacing my current daily driver (a 1978 Alfa Sport Sedan) with a 164.
The biggest challenge is with the electrics (which there are a lot of) but the mechanicals of the 164 are pretty robust. And as Mike mentioned, it has an outstanding engine.
Like any European car the repairs can be spendy. Parts are not really an issue but just make sure there is a competent mechanic in your area. Of course, you want to find a car with a COMPLETE maintenance history and as few owners as possible.
I would stay away from the later 94-95 4-valve cars (the LS and Q) because of the additional cost of maintenance (timing belts, etc). I personally think the more powerful 164S looks the best w/ it's larger wheels and side skirts but they tend to command a premium. Another option would be the Milano. Fewer mechanical issues and RWD but it has a love-it or hate-it design. Plus they are getting old and hard to find in decent shape.
