2WD or 4WD? The 2WD models are pretty straightforward - just drop the driveshaft, disconnect components from the transmission (speedo cable, shift linkage, vacuum modulator), support the transmission, remove the rear engine mount, remove the torque converter cover, support rear of the engine, lower the tail end of the transmission enough to get to the top bolts on the bellhousing, then undo the rest of the bellhousing bolts, then slide the transmission backwards off the input shaft. Be sure you make a note (mark it) on the torque converter and the flex plate, so you can get them lined back up again properly. Also, be sure the torque converter doesn't stick to the flex plate and that you keep the nose of the transmission up, or the torque converter can fall off.
If you've got a 4WD, it's basically the same game, only there is more stuff in the way and you've got to get the transfer case off first...
While everything's apart - it standard convenience maintenance. Do all the things you can't do with the transmission in the way - rear seal, motor mounts are easier, be sure the torque converter isn't the problem.... It also may not be a bad idea to get the driveshaft inspected and replace any u-joints that are there...
