Renault bids for Volvo
12.10.2005
It is reported that Renault recently approached the Ford Motor Company with an offer to buy Volvo Cars.
According to motor industry sources, Renault, in seeking to compete with premium German brands, has made an offer to Ford to purchase the Swedish company outright. Such an acquisition would no doubt generate a welcome cash injection into the American giant's ailing Premiere Automotive Group, which is smarting from Jaguar's massive losses.
Industry commentators are suggesting that Ford's rebuff might prompt Nissan to approach Saab, as the Japanese company seems intent on buying its way into a market it seems unable to satisfy with its own large vehicles.
Nissan, Renault's partner, already has a premium brand in the form of Infiniti but that offers little in the way of an option for Renault as within Europe Infiniti is described as having 'no profile'.
