with only moderate tools. Vice grips, big hammer, a few wrenches.....
Change the oil a lot, like K-Saab says. The rule was every 3K with old dino oils, and since they don't have a filter it's probably the same today. DK about using a synthetic oil in them, since the aircooled engines have a variety of potential leak points the thinner oil may get past. I'd probably do a 20/50 dino oil today in one.
Adjust the valves religiously or you'll burn a #3 exhaust valve, which makes a great noise when it breaks off and falls into the piston, bends the con rod and brings everything to a screeching halt. I speak from experience.
Like K-Saab says, get the Idiot book and do everything it says. The old beetles are wonderful cars. No technology involved, just basic internal combustion, a 1 barrel carbuerator and an exhaust system.
Gone but never forgotten: 1959, 1968, 1970 beetles. Rallied, autocrossed and cross-country trips.
Enjoy!
