I sold my 86 325es 5 speed two months ago. We had it for four plus years. It was given to us by a friend. Nice little car. My son's daily commuting car to school. After I fixed it up when we got it by removing the drive train to replace all gaskets seals, clutch, belt and water pump it gave us virtually no problems until the couple month prior to selling it when one potential buyer pointed out one deficiency after another and I had to take care of it.

I'd say rust is a big issue for a car of that vintage. In my opinion BMW pay less attention to rust than SAAB. As a result you find more rust on a BMW of comparative vintage. BMW still does not use plastic coated brake and fuel lines under the body. The under carriage itself is not rust protected as well as a SAAB. I also have a 95 525i and it is in worse shape than my 95 and 94 9000's in rust, or absence of it, on the sheet metal. My 9k's have none. But the 525i has some exposed area showing under the body.

The e30 is a fairly simple car to maintain and work with. You do not want to work on a e34 5 series. It has many, many more parts than say the 9k. As we know BMW has a much larger following because of the name. Far smaller proportion works on the car as compared to SAAB owners. If you can find one with little rust it should be a joy to drive and maintain. The drive train will be the least of your concerns in general. But again, because of the BMW large following you still need to pay attention. I'd say the chance of it being abused is greater than a SAAB but I may be biased.
