loved my Golf... Posted by peter [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Help... I may like Volkswagens now!, Dan ![]() |
We had a 2001 Golf; absolutely loved it. Beautifully designed and executed for a 15K car. The blue dash lights! The cupholders!
We put 65k miles on it in two years, with only $400 worth of repairs (hole in rubber throttle intake), then sold it for $10.5K.
My mother's had a 1999 Passat for 4 years with zero non-maintenance issues.
If I had a garage, I'd buy a new GTI in a heartbeat. Their turbo is a pretty sweet engine; sort of a lump in the normally aspirated version.
I suspect that VW's are like Saabs in that if you keep up with the maintenance, they're pretty good. However, there have been an awful lot of Jettas/Passats bought by people who expect them to be like Hondas or Toyotas in terms of reliability, ie you can skip a few oil changes/scheduled maintenace -- with the predictable results.
Not a big fan of the new Jetta/Passat styling. I think VW's high point may have come and gone; the Phaeton and V8 Passats are pretty pointless.
