First, please don't chastise me. I bought a '99 Jetta VR6 from a local individual. I'm 99% sure it had no Katrina/flood damage, and knew up front it needed an alignment, brakes, tires and had a crack in the windshield. The day after I bought it, the check engine light came on. Took the first available appointment with the local dealer. Their diagnosis was: catalytic converter, fuel filter, purge selenoid, and fuel pump. Said this pump is cracked near the top and so I shouldn't fill the tank but about half until pump is replaced. The car starts and runs just fine. Passes like a scalded cat, in fact. My son said he smelled fuel in the cabin and the service tech at the dealer said that too, but honestly I never have. Oh, the car has a little over 93k miles on it and gets about 32 mpg. How uncomfortable should I be with this car? How about with that dealership?
