You can go to miata.net and read about the differences between all model years.
You have quite a large budget for a used Miata, probably you are considering the second generation model. I personally like the first generation, although I don't care for the pop up headlights, in my opinion, it looks cleaner than the second generation model.
I think the current model is very nice, but it is still expensive.
If I would buy one, I would be looking for a 1997 model with the 1.8L engine, but I will make it look like the pre '94 model; without the Mazda logo on the hood, with the Mazda sticker on the front bumper corner, and with the classic Miata wheels. And the color, of course, has to be red.
