Just my comments on some 2002 vehicles taken on some fairly short runs on the highway, no real opportunity for any twisties.
My wife and I stopped by to compare the 2002 9-5 Aero and 2002 Audi A6 today, all with between 20-35k miles. Drove two 2002 Aeros, one stick, one auto. Very impressive acceleration! But you don't really notice it in your seatback - only when you eye the speedo and realize you're going 90. Noise levels in the cabin seemed the same at 90 versus 65. Big change from my 94 convertible!
I preferred the manual, but it was fun to merely stomp on the auto's accelerator and point the car where you want it to go. The automatic seemed to vibrate through the brake pedal at stops - a little annoying for the amount of stop and go traffic we endure.
The Audi is a wonderful car too - but I didn't feel the fit and finish were superior to the Saab like I expected based on others' comments. Seats in the Aero are *much* more comfortable, and we prefrerred the alum trim in the Saab to the wood in the Audi (go figure...I guess I've never liked wood dashes). Audi was an automatic, and had comparable pull (without getting any stopwatches out) - I'm sure someone can set me straight. Stereo seemed on par with the Saab (do all Aero's have premium HK? It just didn't seem to wow us), but again I didn't go to test audio systems. The seats of the Saab seemed to be what sold my wife on the Saab. Its funny how the driver's comfort can outweight so many other variables.
Since she loved the Saab, and preferred the auto, we're going to next focus in on the wagon versus 4 door debate, and also decide what color is best. Both Aeros were black, one tan, one black interior. But Hazelnut with tan might be a contender. My only concern with the Aero is previous owner (lessee's) maintenance. Sludge fears are going to keep me awake at night until the valve cover comes off.
Also going to look at the GTO based on so many positive remarks. The M Coupe is still on the list, but more to see how it drives. May be too impractical, and we tend to keep our cars for the long haul.
