A VW TDi -- Jetta, Golf, Beetle, or Passat -- also gets you very high safety ratings that the Metro, Aspire, and other similar tin cans simply do not. They feel much more solid because they are. I believe that since MY 1999 the VW's come with airbags all over the car as std. equipment. Plus ABS.
Also, a diesel engine can be converted to run on veggie oil meaning exellent milege and potentially free fuel (if you collect the WVO from a local restaurant). See http://www.greasecar.com, or other simialr websites.
