Ours was a '96 with 4WD, leather, CD changer, etc. We'd bought it at 25K miles, dumped it at 138K. Mechanically reasonable and fairly good on trips for comfort (but we had the high-end seats). It held a lot (we needed space at the time and there were no Saab wagons then), but really didn't feel stable or safe to me beyond 70 mph, and on a good day it would get 19 mpg highway. Only 16 local. As you note, the newer ones are even worse for mileage.
As it aged it got clunkier and clunkier. My daughter's '95 Saab 9000 CS has 143K on it but is still solid and pretty much rattle free. So is my '96 9K w/ 123K.
People forget SUVs are trucks. Overtime they become more trucklike. There was a clear change in our Exploder after about 120K. It just felt old. Rode in a new one late last year and it just felt like ours did when it was young.
