Every year I hear that Alfa will be returning "in two years." The latest news seems to be the most definitive news yet but that doesn't mean much. Give it a year - I'll bet the return date will be postponed by another year or two.
As far as dealerships go I think the Ferrari/Maserati link was one of Alfas downfall back in the nineties. My perception was that many dealers didn't want to be bothered w/ Alfa and didn't really have the means to assist customers. The dealer in Salt Lake City acted like Alfa was a nuisance and beneath them. I'm just not convinced this would be a good match again.
Overall, I feel Alfa shot themselves in the foot by pulling out in the nineties. Yes the products of the time (a decrepit Spider and an overweight, underpowered 164 sedan) were weak but the following year cars showed a lot of promise. I'm convinced the 'new' Spider and the 156 would have been great sellers and revitalized the brand here in the States. Oh well; it just looks like a lost cause. As you mentioned, BMW did a great job with Mini but I seriously doubt that Fiat has the finances and skills required to return w/ any sort of long-term success.
