Asking for a deposit, especially for a dealer trade, is standard operating procedure, especially in a medium or large dealer. As a small dealer I have other ways of assurance, but pretty normal for a BMW dealer.
Usually a dealer will refund a deposit if there's a problem either with the car or with the customer picking up the car. Technically a dealer can hold your deposit on an ordered car if you don't pick it up, but only until they sell it to someone else. That's not only hardball, thatsa' high inside strike, most dealers aren't that mean/greedy and just refund.
