I've driven a 190E...and it was quite blah. Nothing special at all, just that old heavy Mercedes steering in a VERY small package. Acceleration is nothing to write home about, certainly not nearly as good as a Saab turbo. IIRC, there was barely enough room in the back for a smallish person to sit comfortably. Styling is VERY 80's.
The 300E is similar, but in a larger package. A few more toys maybe. The old 4-matics had problems, the current system (from '96 on or so) is much better. Still going to have the old heavy MB feel with the recirculating ball steering.
Parts for both will be very expensive, as with all MB's. Neither of those cars are particularly/amazingly fun to drive, but they feel solid and can be safe and reliable if maintained properly. I'm sure others will chime in on specifics...
