Good question Mike. I'd eagerly encourage a long test drive with i-Drive (or i-Crash). I did in a new 5 series wagon, and if you make frequent changes to climate or stereo settings it becomes, in my opinion, pretty unsafe... but all post 2004s have it, so it can be a deciding factor. It swayed me far from this car.
The pre-2004 cars are usually described as the best car ...ever. Not a bad place to put yourself.
ALSO, older ones help you avoid the horrible run-flat tires that are on most models of this car. I had 'em on my MINI Cooper and they are a drag. Lousy ride, allegedly un-fixable, post flat. Meaning, if you get a flat, you need a new $250 -350 tire. That's per BMW's legal recs. Can get costly, and irritating.
