Re: Uh uh, resurrected for Volvo.... Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Uh uh, resurrected for Volvo...., Mike Lynch ![]() |
I'm not convinced... While the 4.4l shares some features with the 3.4l, it's all aluminum instead of the previous iron block, has a full extra liter of displacement, has a substantially more complex head, and is built in-house by Yamaha, rather than using a Ford-built block with Yamaha-built heads.
Volvo's Hans Wikman:
"there is little in common between the bigger Volvo engine and the one used in the SHO. About the only significant components common to both engines are the piston connecting rods, he says. The 32-valve V-8 also has continuously variable inlet and exhaust valve timing (CVVT)."
I think it's reasonable to assume that two narrow angle V8s produced by the same company may share some traits, but that's a far cry from one being a punched-out version of the other.
Ford, Volvo, and Yamaha all deny any connection, and as far as I can tell there is no direct relationship in specifications. Yes, it's a Yamaha engine, and yes it's technically in a Ford, but other than that they appear to be two distinct 60 degree V8s.
