I had an 1985 Graduate and still have a 1978 Sedan. Couple of things:
First, get the newest and best one you can. Don't go older than 1982; '82+ has Bosch fuel injection. I would also suggest the Graduate model over the Veloce or Quadrifoglio. The Grads were basically striped models. They usually didn't have A/C, power windows, mirrors, etc. When it comes to Italian cars, the fewer electronics the better.
1986+ had a revised interior. The dash and steering wheel are not as sporty as the '85 editions. The "wood" wheel was replaced w/ a black leather one and the dash was revised. Not a big deal, just different.
1991-93 are probably the best looking and of course the most expensive. Revised styling gave the car a bit cleaner, more up-to-date look.
As far as bang-for buck, the 1985-89 are probably it. As far as reliability goes, they aren't bad. The engine is very good and parts are readily available. They're also very easy to work on yourself. Of course, watch for rust and again, the fewer electronic options the better. And make sure it comes with full records. Don't be alarmed if it's a large file of papers because it should be (for my Sedan, I have a 3" binder full of records since new). Also, the fewer owners the better; the more they change hands, the fewer records are kept and maintenance tends to decrease. Look for a 1-3 owner car.
I would strongly advise you to really shop around and take a look at the Alfa Bulletin Board. You can get a lot of answers and advice there and they have a large classified section. Also take a look at AROC, the Alfa Romeo Club of America. I usually scour the different chapter web site classifieds.
