It's a magic carpet ride, responsive handling, behaved suspension, not harsh, the good traits of a touring car. Steering is not assisted, but it's a big steering wheel for leverage with an appropriate ratio for manual steering, and not that heavy a car compared to a classic Saab. It doesn't need power steering, especially with the stock tire size which I dont use. It also has all the stimuli you'd desire from a sporting car (big torque, nice sounding engine, low seating position, good brakes, quick throttle response, manual transmission, few bells/whistles).
As far as steering in parking lots, etc. I don't. I don't park near other parked cars or navigate such places. It got a hit and run a couple years ago, probably by a parallel parker, which spurred on restoration of the body. I garage it at home, and have a private parking area at work. if the boot had space for traffic cones, I would keep some in there incase I had to park in a public place and wanted to barricade off the car.
Maybe your Alfa would steer better with either more tire inflation, an alignment, or a bigger steering wheel. You'd have to compare it to other Alfas I guess, which could be difficult.
Regarding Stickman's question, the wheels are modern alloy replicas of dunlop d-type alloy wheels. They were also used on racing E-types. ChrisB, yes the tach needs to be worked on, it's the cable from the transmission. I figure if I drive no more than 75% as hard as Alain De Cadenet does on Victory by Design, that is plenty of safety margin till the tach can be fixed.
