I have a 2005 Golf TDI and I love it. I use it for a lot of city driving, and even when I go through a whole tank of diesel doing just short run city driving I get at least 35 mpg out of it. Its fun to drive in the mountains, very comfy on the highway, the torque is always there for you...
BUT, the car takes a huge amount of time to warm up. On cold winter days you dont get heat til you have been driving for like 15 minutes, which can really suck if its snowing or if your breath is freezing to the inside of the windshield all that time. Then, if you get stuck in a traffic jam, the temp will just start dropping. sometimes the temp guage will drop from normal to cold when sitting in traffic. Long idling is bad for the engine because of EGR/PCV, the soot from the exhaust gets sucked back into the intake, as do oily crankcase gasses, which overtime gunk up the intake manifold. TDI drivers are hoping that ULSD will help alleviate this problem.
On the other hand, this is my first diesel which has absolutely no starting issues. The coldest days are no problem. The car does run a little rough sometimes when its really cold, but I have had no worries about no-start.
It really excells on long-distance driving. On highway, now that the car is properly broken in, I get around 50 mpg and the engine turns slow and smooth at highway speeds. Its much more relaxed then a 4 cyl gasser. I usually use my C900 for local driving, and the TDI on longer trips.
