Why is a TT a bad idea?

My wife and I have a 2001 VW Passat (same engine and similar drivetrain) and it's been exceptional. It's very cheap to maintain and is as reliable as a Honda (at least ours has been). I've had several Audi/VW products and have had great experiences with all of them. Quattro is awesome. If you live in a cold climate, there's really nothing (short of an LR3) that comes anywhere close. If you get a TT with the 225hp engine, you're going to be pleasantly surprised by the power.
I really don't think you should make any assumptions about the Audi. Of course, getting records is as important as it is when you buy a Saab. Synthetic oil changes are highly recommended at 5k intervals. The 60k service is fairly expensive (between $700 and $1000) because you have the timing belt, all fluids, serpentine belt, all pulleys and tensioners, thermostat and the water pump. But, if you keep up with the oil changes, there are no worries.
The TT is a VERY well-built car with truly top shelf materials and great design. If you can, try to get a 2001 vs. a 2000 (to avoid 1st-year niggles).
Of course, drive 'em all and buy what you like.
