I have a 1996 E300D now, and sold a 1984 300SD this fall.
If the AC does not work on the W210 cars, the most likely problem is the dash has to come out to replace the evaporator. Plan on $2k if the dealer does it, $1k-$2k is an indy does it, $500 to DIY.
I would not worry too much about the injection pump. The electronics work off a CAN bus and there's not much the shadetree mechanic can to to diagnose/repair the electronics.
There are a lot of OM606 that loose their heads due to glow plugs sticking. The consensus is that soot packs around the plug/head and makes remove difficult. Patience is a virtue.
Although the 1996-up diesels are not as easy to work on as 1984 240D, the ride is MUCh better, the car has a more contemporary look, and in my case, I was much happier.
Plenty of info over at Mercedesshop.com Just remember, any old car will drain you quickly if you have a shop repair it.
For a comparison, I paid $8k for my 1996 E300D with 155k miles. The radio was broken (needed a new fuse in the back of the radio), the 1/2 the lugnuts were rusted and 2 had to be drilled out ($300, including a new wheel), and the injector return hoses were leaking ($20).
