However, ours isn't the newest version. I have a 2001 Passat 1.8t (Tip, FWD) and it's been fantastic. I've had only a handful of very minor issues with it and it's been a REAL pleasure to live with and drive. I highly recommend them. Parts are reasonable and there are outstanding resources to help you out if you turn your own wrench (software, manuals, etc.).
As for the Audi, I've looked at the A3 and it's really a great car. I've had Audis in the past (and just bought another one, actually - hasn't gotten here yet), and they've been truly superb. The only rock I can throw at the A3 is that the back seat is VERY small. Beyond that, it looks like a superb car. I wouldn't have any reason to doubt its reliability or quality. Audis enjoy the same situation when it comes to helpful resources.
If you're in a cold climate, Quattro (or 4Motion in the VW) is amazing. My Saab has been very good in the snow, but, Quattro is god-like by comparison. Even with all season tires, my Audis have been substantially superior in the snow and ice than the Saabs I've owned. Granted, you're in the same situation as everyone else when it comes to stopping and cornering, but, even in the iciest conditions, Quattro is incredible.
