So my weekend-pocket-pet 1965 Austin Mini Cooper was making a significant "taptaptaptap" sound that worried me enough to bench it. I'm thinking possible camshaft, but more likely just a loose rocker.
In 10 minutes I have the valve cover and spark plugs removed, and the right front corner jacked up with the car in 4th gear. Sitting on the floor by the right headlight I've got feeler gauge in my right and the left front tire in my left hand. Sitting in that one spot I'm able to sit and check all 8 rocker clearances while slowly turning the engine over by rotating that right tire w/my left hand! I love old, simple machinery. And when it's tiny and well laid out that's a bonus. Oh... so what was the problem? Turned out to be a valve spring contacting the inside of the valve cover. All I had to do was budge the cover forward while installing it. Gotta love that!
