Up until 2001, they really liked the 9-5 and was one reason I bought my first one in 1999 and then two 2001's when I lost my 1999 in a flood. But they haven't liked the 9-5 much since the MCE in 2002, primarily because of the changes in the ride that they think is too rough and continued high level of road noise that they don't think is up to standard of class. Overall, they have decent results with reliability, but did identify some trouble spots. But decent reliability and good safety ratings (except for no curtain airbags) give it the circled check that you mention. In general, I don't think they care much about styling, image or too much about driving fun (although lately have been commenting a little on it--note that they don't think there is any fun at all in driving the Lexus ES350, although they like many things about it). I have noticed they haven't been bowing at the altar of the Asian cars as much as they used to except for a love of the new Infiniti's (which are well built but I didn't think all that great road cars).
