I have an 05 6 Sport Wagon that I bought new in July 05. I have the base model 5-speed with no options. It’s proven reliable so far but the clutch was replaced at 13k (I don’t think it needed replacement but the clutch is a known weak spot on the 04-05 Mazda 6). I think the dealer did it to get rid of me; my complaint was a noise from the pedal, not a mechanical clutch failure. Whatever. I also had the radio replaced twice for CD player failure. No other issues though and currently at 22k.
The car rides nice and handles well. The ride is a little rough on broken pavement but I do have the tires pumped up. It’s smooth and tracks nice on the highway. I am looking to replace it, though, my commute has recently changed and I would prefer a slushbox (and some options). I now commute mainly at low speeds through a hilly area; my only complaint about the 6 is that the Duratec is lacking in the torque department on the low end. I noticed this on my test drive but figured I could live with it. Dealers are offering me 10.8-11.5k for trade-in.
Feel free to send an email if you have any more questions. I can’t offer any info on the Passat but I did have a beloved 86 GTI. Good luck.
