I'm no psychologist, and I'm not picking on you, just a friendly discussion on a slow day, but I dunno' where you come up with the assumption that folks who buy Porsche and BMW SUVs have ulterior motives. That folks buy a product to promote an image is stating the obvious. What is it about that image that troubles you?
With the same logic at a different level you could say the same things about people who buy Saabs.
To me the statement that "who buy them because of the image they project, not because they are great performers" is pretty much true of all high-line products, not just Porsche and BMW SUVs.
And your assumption that Porsche BMW SUV buyers "are remotely interested in cars beyond the appliance capability" is 180 out. I don't think you blow all that dough without a clue as to the performance capabilities of the product. I think the highline SUVs are purchased by a greater proportion of serious car folks, not just because of the bling. Bling, more money than sense, is Escalade Navigator territory.
