Again, based on the state of electronic engine controls in 1985, and the fact that RR is not known for industry-leading technology, I would check under the dash, and try and find the speedo cable. Back then, it was common to assume the O2 sensor needed replacement every 30K miles. In other cars I've seen of that vintage, there was a little box that hugged the speedo cable. Basically, it was a mechanical counter that tripped every 30K or so miles. The other option would be part of the odometer.
The battery trick is a good start - simple and easy. But if that doesn't work, I'd check around the speedo cable.
