Any fans of old big block Chev engines here? (Or old fans of big block Chevs?)
My faithful '68 Corvette roadster is about 500 lbs light in front as it sits under it's winter cover right now. After countless years of reliable & thrilling performance, the 427 started getting weak (relative term) the past 3 summers. So... this winter "Thumper" is getting treated to a complete engine rebuild.
Was going to go stock, since the whole car is un-modified. But since the stock heads can't handle unleaded fuel, I'm going with a modern set of Aluminum Edelbrock RPM heads and matched cam aimed at mid range power. And since it adds little cost, I'm also going with a 454 crank/rods. Back in the '80s it was bored +.030 and will need a slight overbore again, so resulting size will be around 470ci. (I'm keeping all the original parts so it can go back to stock someday.) Estimating final output will land around 475hp & 500+ lb-ft. With it's stock 3.70 gears & close ratio 4-spd, "Thumper" has always been a bunch of fun. In the Spring I'm sure I'll feel much more kick than ever before! Hopefully still a "manageable" handful to drive. We've been together well over 20 years & I'm just really looking forward to my old pal feeling well again! Just thought I'd share.
