My first track car was a near relative, an 8v Jetta Gli (A2/Mark 2). Really, probably a better car for autocross and most track stuff than a 9000. Lots of easy and relatively inexpensive mods, some may have been made by the current owner. Just, of course, watch if mods will move your car into a modified or other class where it may become less competitive. But, I think it's a good choice. As with any 20 year old car, condition will be everything - how has it been taken care of. The Jetta I had had 266,000 miles, never missed a beat, and was a helluva lotta fun, and easy to work on. Don't know how much autocross you've done, but tires are (almost) everything. A stiff spring and shock will be next, followed by decent engine breathing - intake and exhaust. If you want to start spending a lot of money, think of an LSD. Beyond that, it's mostly down to you...
