Yes, it's basically a Corolla wagon. Unlike the Corolla though, you can get the Matrix in AWD if needed. I did a little research and found the Matrix is built in Canada while it's sister car, the Pontiac Vibe is built at the NUMMI plant in California, likely the same place your Corolla came from (assuming your Corolla is a US built one). I originally assumed the Matrix was built along side the Vibe. My 1996 Corolla was built at the NUMMI factory and, in terms of reliability, was one of the best cars I've ever owned.
You probably can't go wrong with it. Personally, I'm not a fan of the styling of it or the Vibe. If I needed a wagon, I'd definitely give the Mazda3 a look (or better yet, the Speed3). The Subaru Impreza is another option if AWD is needed. Of course, at year end, Saab 9-3 2.0T Sport Combis can be had for very similar money to the Matrix but won't be as reliable. According to CR, the Matrix has excellent reliability. It gets restyled for 2009.
