I'm beginning to realize why I drive European cars - every American/Japanese/Korean vehicle I've driven has been a major disappointment. This time it's a Hyundai Sonata. The Avis guy originally offered me a Grand Marquis, but still being well on the wrong side of 60 to drive around in one of those, I requested something smaller. I was quite interested in the Sonata - I see a lot of them about and they seem to get quite good reviews.

But I don't know why. They are quiet, I guess, have plenty of trunk space and a reasonable amount of room for 4 adults, but that's about it. I cannot get comfortable in the driver's seat (and every car I've ever owned since my 88 9kT has had power seats - why are these not standard in modern, non-economy cars?). I think the main problem is that the seat bottom won't tilt up at the front, which is how I like it to support my thighs. I've just been tooling around Albuquerque in the last 24 hours, but I have some highway miles ahead of me and I'm not looking forward to the backache!

I wasn't expecting performance anywhere close to my Saabs, but this car is truly anemic. How can my 92 900TC have only 4 cylinders and 160HP, but tons more torque and general pep? I don't understand it.

The good thing about renting cars, is it makes me truly appreciate my 1990s era Saabs - that feeling of getting back into the driver's seat after a week of discomfort cannot be beaten!
