4000 to 80 & 90... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: I've driven a few..., B Millar ![]() ![]() |
Audi's took a real significant jump in quality and sturdiness when they went from the 4000 and 5000 designations to the 80, 90, 100 and 200 designations. Though the body stayed relatively the same on the larger cars the 4000's got a new body and both cars finally got the world class interior that Audis are still known for today.
So the first Quattros were the 4000 Coupes and jeez whatta' car! Not real solidly built IMHO, but mechanically pretty solid. I sold quite a few Quantum Syncros, it's VW brother, mostly in cool sportwagon form. Back then the quality of the Quantum's and 4000's were equal.
But alas, many highline cars eventually become too expensive to keep on the road and I've always thought Audis could be more trouble than Saabs as the Saabs were somewhat simpler with less models and variations.
A good friend had a Quattro Coupe, the beautiful teardrop shape 1990 version.
