I've got two. One is a stock 92 DD and the other is a 91 that I’m building into track with a built performance engine.

I can’t say it’s a relaxing car on long freeway trips, but after a few moments behind the wheel in the curves, few cars can match its simplicity and control under $20K. If you plan on really tracking the car, you can’t match the replacement cost of the consumables either.

I’ve seen a logical upgrade path from the Miata is a Boxter S and from the brief drive I’ve had in one of those, I’d agree.

Yes, they really are bulletproof. The 1.6L is a detuned version of a reliable turbo engine (think 323GTX rally car). Replacement parts are reasonable and you really have to be trying to kill the car for it to fail on you.

I’m 6’ and 175 and I fit alright. With a set of aftermarket seats (or in my case seats from a Lotus Elise) you will sit much lower and gain more height comfort.

One of the best things about Miatas is that you can still find garage queens in the early years that have under 50K miles. Makes a big difference if your project starting point is an $8K 50K mile 1993 that is in pristine condition or a $3K 150K miles 1993 that is more of a Jeep.

Personally I like the 90 to 93 cars as the 1.6L is still smooth near the redline. In the end, there is marginal difference between the 1.8 and 1.6 performance.

Also, I personally don’t like the looks of the NB cars and they definitely reflect Mazda’s cost cutting measures in finish and materials. Plus, the interior is a bit more cramped than the NA.
