As much as I am a die hard Saab guy, I got my '10 335d in October and I think this may be the best car I've ever owned. I traded an '08 335i convertible, and haven't looked back since. The 335i has a chronic fuel pump failure issue that BMW has yet to address. Mine failed once at 4000 miles, and many others have had upwards of 3 replaced in less than 20K. That's lemon law territory.
The diesel engine pulls like a freight train. 425lb/ft of torque really is your friend. Passing power is ballistic missle level. The engine is very refined, is silent on the highway and the car is geared for the engine to be a 2000 RPM at 80mph. There is zero exhaust noise either, like you get in the 335i, which actually can get annoying on the highway. I got the Sport package with sport seats and 18 inch Michelin run flats, and the car handles like a sports car.
Throw in 23-24 around town, and 35-37mpg on my highway trips and it's really hard to find fault with the car. Plus, in CA, diesel is available just about everywhere (which is not the case in many other states.) and is cheaper than premium.
BMW is not doing a great job of marketing the car...there was one dealer demo when I went to test drive it back in August, and it was sold a week later. They didn't get another demo for 5 MONTHS. Not a good way to get people to buy the car. Granted, it's not an econobox...the Jetta/Golf TDI is much better for that....or the Audi A3 TDI....but considering my 335i was getting between 13-14mpg around town in LA, I'm over 50% better with the diesel engine just in the city alone, and get 400 miles per tank around town. Compare that to maybe 250 mi in my 9-5 Aero wagon!
I can't sing its praises enough. I think it's the best car and engine BMW has to offer. And this one matches my Cosmic Blue 9-5 Aero wagon nicely!
Cheers,
Paul H
