No CEL? I'd visit a dilership or an independent with a SELECT monitor to do a quick diagnostic. These cars are pretty smart.

Poor fuel mileage could be caused by many things. You should be getting about 28 mpg with the kind of driving you do.

Do check air filter by taking off the whole airbox. It is easier that taking off the top cover on your model/year and will not disturb the seal.

Watch your (running) engine in darkness -- often times you can see electrical arching under hood, meaning that ignition cable insulation is imperfect.

Your exhaust could be clogged. You can usually pinpoint this using a vacuum gauge.

There could be a vacuum leak around one of the injectors. This will lead to a rich condition on the rest of the cylinders, as ECU will try to compensate for the lean signal from the affected cylinder. Poke around the injectors with a propane bottle (and hose) with the engine running.

Your injectors could be leaking.

Do you feel transmission going into 4th gear and clutch lock-up? You should be able to count your gear changes and, at constant speed above about 55 mph you will see rpms drop a little at some point -- your lockup clutch working. If you don't feel that, it might be malfunctioning, which will affect fuel economy. Do change ATF at regular intervals using non-synthetic fluid only.

Your worn out tires could be contributing to the problem. Are they properly inflated?

Is your A/C on all the time?

Is your engine running cold? Does the temp gauge go to middle within a few minutes of driving? If not, your thermostat may be stuck in open position, which will cause poor gas mileage.
