Re: I don't believe in no service transmissions... Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: I don't believe in no service transmissions..., Johnson ![]() |
On no-service transmissions there are generally a couple options. The AW transmissions in recent Saabs (and Volvos, and others), for example, have no service point so the only option is to disconnect the fluid cooler hoses and pump out old while refilling new. On the the 4T4x transmissions I believe you have a removable oil pan, so procedure is to drop the pan to drain (and change the filter) then refill. I *believe* refill is a "stand pipe" like many other GM transmissions (filled from underneath with the engine running) but MIGHT be a bolt hole in the top (also engine running). I have heard of a number of shops refilling GM transmissions with the engine OFF, and the result is that you end up several quarts low and your transmission eats itself in short order. I am not *positive*, but 99% positive the 4T4x transmissions are like this, so be sure wherever you take it has the facts and refills the transmission properly, to the right level with the right fluid.
I am also of the belief there is no such thing as a lifetime fill in a transmission - certainly an automatic one - but lacking any manufacturer guideline it's just a guess as to when you do it. I think around 100k sounds reasonable, but that might be too soon or too late. Who knows? :)
On the "too late" possibility, just be aware a lot of transmission techs are of the opinion that changing transmission fluid can lead to failure. The idea being the crap in the fluid is what allows it to continue to work, and changing the fluid will cause it to stop working. I have never experienced this, but the internet is littered with stories on this topic. My opinion is that your transmission is young and well-designed and a fluid flush will probably cure the problems you're experiencing, just in the interest of full disclosure now you've got the other side of the story as well. ;)
